Brain Breaks with GoNoodle

One of the favorite parts of the day...other than recess...is our Brain Break.  We have this in between our Reading Workshop and Math.   For our Brain Break we watch Go Noodle.  Check it out at:

www.gonoodle.com

Here is a video of our class in action:  Sorry I can't figure out how to rotate it!  Oops!

Why are Brain Breaks Important?  They...

  • use movement to stimulate neurological pathways and help both sides of the brain work together

  • improve coordination

  • improve concentration

  • enable students to become calm, alert and ready for learning

The Importance of Puzzles

You’ve probably heard that puzzles are good for your child’s mind and cognitive development; in fact, you may have received puzzles as baby shower or new baby gifts. But why are puzzles considered helpful to a child’s mental development?    Click on the link to read more.

Reading Workshop

During reading workshop,  readers have been learning about how to take care of books.  Readers turn the pages by turning the page from the corner.  We select books from our book bins and return them neatly when we are done reading.

Everyone has a special reading spot in our classroom.  When it's reading time we 1. stay in one spot, 2.  get started right away, 3. read the whole time and 4. read quietly.

Mat Man

As part of our writing workshop we have been practicing how to draw Mat Man.  Click on the link to watch a video!

Stations

Today we had 15 of our 16 children at school for the first time!  It was much different than having only six!!  The best part of the day was Station Time.  Boys and girls rotated through four stations.  The goal is for them to be independent learners at their station, so that eventually I can meet with a small group to teach guided reading.

Here are the stations that we did today:
ipads

sensory bin

play dough

fine motor

Bryson and Phoenix did a fantastic job sharing
